Remote patch

Hi AI Gurus

We need to install patches remotely. The users have update authority to APPDATA only. The patch needs go into APPDATA and other directories.

I have read about Group Policy
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816102
What does AI recommend for remote patches to Windows XP machines, where the users have write/update authority on APPDATA only?

Thanks

Re: Remote patch

Hi Bob,

Since the users can update only the Application Data folder and the patch needs access to other folders, the patch installation should be performed by an elevated user (for example an Administrator). With GPO you can assign the package to an Administrator user which will install the patch.

Another approach would be to assign the package to the limited user. If the original package required Administrator privileges, when the patch is launched it will prompt for elevation (Administrator credentials).
