Locked file issue on uninstall/update

Postby mheckmann » Thu Aug 02, 2012 6:30 pm

Hi,

I came across a fairly weird issue today:

Trying to uninstall our software resulted in a Folder being left behind which was inaccessible (Tis also prevented updates from being successful). Trying to delete the folder manually would have windows state that I don't have enough privileges to remove the folder (despite being logged on as administrator). A little more digging with the help of the program "LockHunter" revealed a process connected to my Printer Control Program to be locking the file and folder and only after removing the lock with the help of LockHunter made it possible for me to delete it.
A little bit more digging showed that besides our software and another package no other program folders had this lock in place. Besides wondering why my Printer Control Software would have any interest in locking our Software Folder I am wondering:
Is there a way in the installer to prevent other processes from locking Files and Folders in our Software Installation?

Thx
Markus

Hi Markus,

You cannot prevent the OS, or any other resource from keeping a handle to a file from your installation. Normally, the OS should present you with the "Files in Use" dialog if one of the files it tries to remove is used by another application. Have you tested this package on multiple clean machines and got the same result? Virtual machines are recommended for testing.

Thx Bogdan,

I tested this on my virtual machine and it is acting always the same if the Printer Control Software is installed - otherwise it's fine... I file it under weird behavior of other Software packages. Nothing that can be done about it except uninstalling that printer software...

cheers
