AppX / Metro Installations

Sat Apr 28, 2012 7:00 pm

Are you planning any support for the AppX / Metro application installation format?

Full support for Windows 8 is a top priority for us. With the next release we'll make available launch conditions, prerequisites, etc..

Future versions will include additional improvements.

Actually, I am not asking about Windows 8 at large, but Metro - and AppX/Metro installations in particular.

For example, please see:

Is there anything you could do as Advanced Installer for Metro/AppX?

Or has Microsoft locked out all setup technology vendors of this new game?

Hi,

The AppX engine is not public like Windows Installer. So there is no point in a custom implementation and additional features are out of the question. Visual Studio 11 offers everything you need to create AppX packages. If you need more than Visual Studio 11 offers, you can't use AppX.

Doesn't this seem a bit like predatory practice on part of Microsoft, to be pushing long-time install vendors out of "the game" like this?

Not really. Current MSI and EXE installers will still be supported a long time from now. AppX applications have a different target, this is why Microsoft uses a closed system.
