Prerequisites

Hi -

It would be very helpful if Advanced Installer permitted me to display a message (with my own content) during EACH prerequisite installation.

Some of these prerequisites (e.g., the .NET Framework) take a noticeable amount of time to install.

Currently, my choices are to use the non-silent interface that comes with the prerequisite's setup program, or to use a silent install, with absolutely nothing on the screen while the prerequisite is being installed.

The problem with the non-silent interface is that it requires one or more button clicks (so it can't be used unattended). Of course, the problem with the silent install is that the absence of any display confuses the user.

The displayed message should allow different content for each prerequisite install (e.g., Installing .NET Framework 1.1, Upgrading Data Access Components to Version 2.8). It would also be nice (but not absolutely required) to have a progress bar display.

Also (different suggestion), you might want to consider moving prerequisites to its own topic rather than 'hiding' it under Media.

Hi Jeff,

But I jsut checked and a message box is displayed while a prerequisite is being installed. It goes like:
-- Launching PreRequisite --
Installing: Windows Installer for Window NT/2K/XP

Please make sure you are using the latest version of AI.

As for Prerequisites in their own topic instead of under Media - the problem is that they depend on the "EXE" option being selected in the Media tab. And the general topic panel is getting quire crowded as it is...

Interesting -

I haven't seen the dialogs that you're describing. I'm using AI version 2.2 (licensed); is there a more recent one?

My install has 3 prereqs: Windows Installer, .NET Framework, and MDAC. On my test environments, Windows Installer is already present, so that prereq isn't invoked. I've got the .NET Framework prereq to install quietly, but not with no interface, so I see the MS dialogs for that one. The MDAC upgrade prereq is set to run quietly with no interface. It runs, but with no dialogs at all. (That's fine for the MS dialogs, but I'd like to display the dialog you described.)

I'm also using a WinZip self-extracting file to distribute the software. That software displays its own small dialog throughout the install, and it's behind the MS dialogs (for .NET Framework) and the AI dialogs (in my install). I've tried running the install and moving the MS dialogs and the WinZip dialog away from center screen, and I still don't see the dialog you describe for the MDAC prereq.

Regarding the position of PreRequisites in AI, it's really not a problem for me. I just thought that it would make it easier for new AI users to find. (When looking for prerequisites, having to think 'Media' is probably not very intuitive.)

Please send me an email to support at advanced installer dot com and I will reply with a screen shot of the launch dialog.
