Support for Windows Server 2022

Fri Sep 03, 2021 2:50 pm

Dear Advanced Installer Support Team,

We just upgraded to your latest Advanced Installer version (18.6.1), because many customers are asking for Windows Server 2022 support. Unfortunately we still cannot find that OS in the list of
Launch Conditions -> System -> Supported Operation Systems

Are you supporting that OS already or you are planning to support it in the future? It would be important for us.

Best regards,
Zsolt

Hello Zsolt,

We already have this on our TODO list of improvements.

"Add Windows Server 2022 to Supported Windows Versions list for prerequisites"

and

"Predefined launch condition for Windows Server 2022"

are already in testing, from what I can see in our bug tracking tool.

Best regards,
Catalin

Dear Catalin,

May I have a question :) I just wanted to test this ticket with the latest version of Advanced Installer (18.7), so prepared a Windows Server 2022 virtual machine.

However as a first test - purely out of curiosity - I wanted to install an older version of our product, which was generated by AI version 17.9. In theory that AI version does NOT support Windows Server 2022. That OS is missing from Supported OS list at Launch Conditions tab. Somehow I managed to install that .exe on my VM. Do you have any idea how is that possible? I'm a little bit confused now :)

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Best regards,
Zsolt

Hello Zsolt,

The changes that the new Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 brought are not that drastic that a normal MSI/EXE would not work on it.
"Add Windows Server 2022 to Supported Windows Versions list for prerequisites"
Perhaps the name is a little bit confusing here, indeed.

The above means we have added Windows Server 2022 to the list of supported Servers when you, for instance, add a Windows Feature Bundle.

Now, you can specifically choose to install a feature bundle that might be specific to Windows Server 2022 (i.e. it exists in WS2022 but not in WS2016).
"Predefined launch condition for Windows Server 2022"

The above basically means you can now prevent your setup package to be installed on Windows Server 2022, if you need to.

Hope things are clearer now! :)

Dear Catalin,

Thanks, it's clearer now, yes.

So basically older .exe files we prepared with older AI version (17.9) are going to work on Windows Server 2022 machines, with other words they can be installed.

With your improvements we can basically prevent that, if we want to.

Thanks for the info, it's really clearer now :)

Best regards,
Zsolt
