File [C:\...\ExternalUI.exe] could not be read

Hi,

I am new to the Advanced Installer but was already succesfull in building an .exe package. Suddenly I received the error "File [C:\Program Files (x86)\Caphyon\Advanced Installer 18.8\stubs\x86\ExternalUI.exe] could not be read. Please check if the setup is not already running."

I am not aware of any changes I did in my project. Did reboot the PC serveral times, checked for processes in Task Manager, even reinstalled Advanced Installer 18.8 but nothing helped.

How can I handle this error?

Hello and welcome to our forums,

I am not sure why this happens.

Can you please verify if an antivirus/anti-malware running in the background may be restricting access to the file, has that file quarantined?

I alread disabled the virus scanner, did not help.

Not (yet) sure but I think it has to do with the "Enable verboose log" feature. I believe disabling that feature helped. Have to figure out this week - today we have a public holiday in Austria. :D

Hello Michael,

First of all, I hope you enjoyed your day off!

This is indeed quite the strange behavior.

I am not quite sure what to say about the "Enable verbose logging" option, it shouldn't be related to this error you are receiving.

In fact, I have built the .AIP file you provided on my test machine, with and without that option and in both cases, the build was successful.

This is telling me that perhaps there's something with the machine you are testing this on.

If possible, could you please test this on a clean machine and let me know if everything is working as expected?

I am now experiencing this issue. I get the same error as the original author (with a slightly different file path due to the later version). I recently updated to version 20.5. When I look at the directory specified in the error message, I do not see a "ExternalUI.exe" file at all.

Any ideas?

Hello Radiator and welcome to our forums,

This might happen if the related file was isolated by the antivirus, I can ensure this was a false-positive. What antivirus software are you using? Is there any information that the antivirus removed those files?

To fix this, please download and run again the 20.5 version of Advanced Installer in Repair mode:

Please let me know if everything is working as expected after this.

Thanks so much for your response Liviu . I downloaded the installer again and ran repair. This seemed to fix that problem, as the files are now resident in the appropriate directory.
