ARM64 EXE setup

Wed Mar 30, 2022 2:33 pm

Hello,

During addition of ARM64 platform to our product installer(desktop app), I found that the build type set to EXE (single or with resource next to it) will generate an installer that does not work on the ARM64 architecture (Windows 10 or 11, latest or otherwise).

The error pops immediately when the installer is run on an ARM64 machine: "This installation package is not supported by this processor type.". The hardware used was a Surface Pro X with Microsoft SQ2 processor. Same result on VMs.

The MSI built types work just fine.

The test was done also on a new, simple, *follow the wizard*, installer project, with AI version 18.9 (also upgrader afterwards to 19.3 with same result)

As the MSI build works, the workaround is acceptable for us, but I think raising the issue is still worthy.

Best regards,
Gabriel Iacob

Hello Gabriel,

This should be working starting with our 18.9 version of Advanced Installer.

Please allow us some more time to further investigate this (our QA team will need to run some tests tomorrow on our ARM64 machine) and I will followup on this thread as soon as I will have more details from them.

Best regards,
Catalin

Hello Gabriel,

We have tested this on our end, but we can not reproduce the behavior you described.

If possible, could you please create a sample project (that I can build on my end) that reproduces this and forward it to me?

Best regards,

Hi Catalin,

Thank you for your reply.

I've made an archive with the aip and a screenshot with the error.
I can make a video for the wizard steps, if necessary, but all I did is chose mix 32/64bit package and hit just the next button (I unchecked the build now at the end). Then I chose the arm64 type and did a build. The screenshot is to show the same generated exe is executed on an ARM64 device with the error popping up.

I hope it helps,
Gabriel Iacob

Hello Gabriel,

Unfortunately, we can not reproduce the same behavior, even with your package. It runs just fine on our machine.

Most likely, that is due to the processor type, as we have SQ1 and you have SQ2 on your end.

I have created a ticked on this so our dev team can further investigate this issue, but this might take a while as we do not currently own an SQ2 machine.

Hi Catalin,

Yes, I agree there can be hidden variables and I doubt Microsoft's innocents, also. I'll provide additional machine info, if needed.

Regards,
Gabriel

Hello Kim and welcome to our forums,

Unfortunately, the issue was put on hold since we were not able to further investigate this on our end.

I will send you an email with a step-by-step test-case you can follow to help us further investigate this.

Best regards,
Catalin
