Is it possible to decide at install time, based on the input the user provides in a custom dialog, using eventually a custom action if the current installation is going to create a new instance or simply update an existing instance?

I have the same wish like Andy to customize de ProductName based on user input. That's why I'd like to ask if it's something new in the newest version or if you see a possibility to change it per custom-action/VBScript?
