Error installing prerequisites on Win95 OSR2

I've created an install package that has Windows Installer 2 set as a prereq. The URL points to a directory on my own site and I've verified that the URL is correct.

The problem is when I try to test the package on a clean Win95 OSR2 installation, I get the error "Some prerequisites could not be downloaded. You can try again or remove them from the prerequisites list." The problem here is trying to figure out the cause. The error message with the root cause in the list view is in the inactive parent window. The "Status" column is only 30 or 40 pixels wide so all I can see of the error is text that says "Error: The p..." If I click the OK button on the dialog, the list view disappears and I never have the opportunity to look at the error message.

I'm open to recommendations.

Hi Jim,

The Setup.exe tool require Internet Explore 3 as minimal configuration so please ensure that you have it installed and then try again.

If you have it installed then please ensure that is not damaged (missing dll's).

Regards,
Gigi

Hi Gigi,

IE3 is installed and operational. I used it to verify that the system could successfully download the file in question. If IE3 weren't present, the installer wouldn't have even started up. I tested a clean Win95 install and got the error "The setup.exe file is linked to missing export ADVAPI32.DLL:CryptAcquireContextA"

I can use GotoMeeting to show you what's happening if you would like to see for yourself.

I reinstalled Win95 OSR2 from scratch to make sure that nothing was damaged in my last install. I received the same error with the AI installer. The default install of OSR2 comes with IE3. As before, I tested IE3 and it worked fine.

Hi Jim,

We can't reproduce this error because we don't have Windows 95 OSR2 on our computers. Please install Internet Explore 4 and tell us if the Setup has the same behaviour.

Regards,
Gigi

I installed IE4.01 SP2 on Win95 OSR2. AI still failed, but with a different status in the listview than with IE3. Again, the status is obscured so I can't use the message to give you any information.

I tried installing Winsock2 to see if there was a dependency on it, but that didn't help.

In contrast, when I test on a clean machine of Windows 98, which includes IE4, everything works fine.

How can we get this resolved? The problem could be determined easily if I can get a test version of AI that fixes the problem where "Status" is obscured in the listview. You can reproduce this issue easily on any version of Windows by creating a prerequisite based on a URL to a non-existent host, such as http://192.168.205.205/junk.exe

Hi Jim,

There was a bug in AI and we fixed it. The fix will be present in the 4.0 version which will be released any time now.

Gigi
