Building Patch from EXE (installers)

I have a setup project in which I am attempting to prepare a patch. I read that in order to prepare a patch using EXE installers it is necessary to retrieve the MSI package from the EXE using the AI /extract operation. I have done so - and retrieved the MSI but when I pack them into an patch I get the following error when performing the upgrade:
this package can only be run from a bootstrapper.


What is missing - followed the patch setup using the extracted MSI'. Is there anything missing?

saw in other posts that if the installer is complex and includes other requirements then the extract option is not really usable.

Hi Peter,

Please keep in mind that this error may appear if some patch rules listed in the "Creating Patches article are not respected. Are you sure that you respected them all?

yes I went through the list - and was following all the reqs
