Pinned taskbar shortcut is invalid after upgrade

If a user pins our application to the taskbar, this shortcut will be invalid after the application is upgraded to a new version, and the user will get this message when clicking the shortcut:

Can't open this item
It might have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Do you want to remove this item?

I assume this is because the associated shortcut is removed as part of the uninstall/install process of the upgrade, thereby invalidating the pinned shortcut.

Is there a way to stop this from happening? Either by not removing the associated shortcut during an upgrade or some other method.

Thanks,

/Rasmus

Re: Pinned taskbar shortcut is invalid after upgrade

Hello Rasmus and welcome to our forums,

I'm afraid this is the expected behavior. The pinned shortcut is left behind as it was not created by the installer.

Please see the Pinned application icons get invalidated on uninstall forum thread.

If you manually create the shortcut after you install your setup, then please note that the shortcut has nothing to do with the setup and the behavior you described is normal.

Since the EXE is removed from the machine (both during an uninstall and upgrade), the shortcut will remain invalid as it requires the path to the EXE and that does not exist after an uninstall.
