What files get installed?

Hi

I am new to using advanced installer. I am very happy with the product, and quite surprised just how easy it is to get into.

However, I am now stuck with a problem, that i am hoping people maybe able to help me with.

The company I work for uses a piece of software, that gets sent out to all our customers around the country, and ideally installed onto the machines by the customer.

The installer package that is currently used is very old, and the installation process is extremely long winded.

This package uses the original install created by the programmers who produced this software, over 5 years ago. There are many complicated, and misleading stages required to complete the installation of the the program.

As you can imagine, some of the people who are installing this software have hardly any computer knowledge at all, and it is very time consuming having to talk them through an install over the phone, and getting them to move files, create folders, change attributes and add shortcuts etc etc

I would like to be able to create an install that is a lot simpler, and installs the files with as little user interaction as possible. I know that i will be able to do this, but the problem i have is finding out what gets installed by the original install program, and what reg keys get added, removed or modified etc.

I have used Veritas Discover to try and acheive what i require, but that only listed registry key changes, and not installed file locations.

So, if you have any ideas, locations of any logs i might not know exist, or 3rd party software that can do what i need, then please let me know

Many Thanks

Karl

Hi,

you could monitor the old installation with Filemon and Regmon from Sysinternals.
These two tools are quite the best choice to monitor what a program does :)
kind regards,
Alex
