Re: minor patch update error

Hello,

Can you please tell us if you have recently installed updates for your Windows OS on the problematic machine? We had a similar report (with the same error) from another user who encountered the same error after installing several updates for his system. He was able to overcome the error by uninstalling all the updates he installed (there were quite many), but unfortunately we cannot say for sure which Windows updates may broke the system and generate this error.

So, what you can try is to uninstall the Windows updates you have recently applied on your machine and see if this helps. Also, you can take a look on the ".NET 4 fails to install because SECUREREPAIR fails to CreateContentHash" thread which could be useful for you.

Let us know if this helped.

All the best,
Daniel

Re: minor patch update error

Hello , thanks for the reply

my system is set to automatic update and i can see lots of updates where installed in my machine , and this error is not specific to one machine
i have received the same error from my client side also , up to now i have received 10+ of complaints with the same error.

i have gone through the link(Stack Overflow) u have shared , but the error specified is different there (Error: 997)
but we are receiving Error : 123

Re: minor patch update error

Hello,

Can you please send us the .AIPs (project files) of your old and new product version to support at advancedinstaller dot com so we can further investigate them?

If you could isolate a pattern or test case when this issue appears it would be also very useful for us. So, feel free to share with us any information you think it could be relevant for the issue.

All the best,
Daniel

Re: minor patch update error

Hello,

I've tested your sent files and I was able to replicate the behavior on a Windows 8 x64 virtual machine after I've installed all Windows updates available at the present time.

Considering that the patch successfully installed before applying Windows updates, it seems the patch installation error is caused by a Windows update. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find the Windows updates which interferes with the patch installation as this is a very time consuming operation. Please give us some time to further investigate this and we'll get back to you as soon as we have more insights.

Until then, as a workaround instead of building your new product version as a patch you can build it as a major upgrade.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

All the best,
Daniel

Re: minor patch update error

Hello,

After further investigations, I'm afraid we weren't able to isolate exactly the Windows update (or pack of updates) which generates this issue. Trying to identify this, we even tried to uninstall in turn dozens of applied updates, but the issue is still present. We'll try to report this issue to Microsoft and hopefully we'll be able to get a positive resolution for this issue.

We'll update this thread after getting a Microsoft resolution for this issue.

Re: minor patch update error

Hello,

I'm afraid this is still an ongoing investigation, but for now it seems its unlikely to get a Microsoft resolution for this.

We'll update this thread if a resolution will occur.

Thank you for your understanding.

Re: minor patch update error

Hello,

For future users facing the same issue: Please note this behavior is not caused by Advanced Installer issue limitation. I'm afraid there is nothing we can do in our part to fix this issue.

This is a Windows issue and we already reported this to Microsoft, but unfortunately it seems they are finding very difficult to offer support for Windows Installer related issues. The issue was already posted on the "Every PATCH installation fails after installing Windows Updates" Microsoft forum.

Re: minor patch update error

Hello,

Just as an addendum to this thread, to workaround this issue you can try to set the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\SecureRepairPolicy" registry value to 2 and add your application product code under "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\SecureRepairWhitelist" registry key.

For more details please check the "Known issue 2" section of the "Security update for Windows Installer Service: August 12, 2014" Microsoft article.
