Patch build fails

Hi,

I have a patch project that has suddenly stopped building.

The error log when trying to build the patch is :-
ERROR: Could not create the patch authoring transform at path: C:\DOCUME~1\BUILD~1.USE\LOCALS~1\Temp\~pcw_tmp.tmp\OrionDRSS_2ToOrionDRSS.MST.

Exception - Reason: MsiMsp.exe failed to create the patch file.

Build finished because an error was encountered.

So far as I can tell no Patch rules have been broken and no other processes have the msi files open.

Most disconcertingly, a recent backup of the project that used to work no longer works and the same error is produced.

I cannot help notice that in between the project working and an identical project not working, we upgraded to v7.7 of Advanced Installer which has added 2 tables to the msi file. Could this be causing the problem ?

I'd appreciate your feedback on this.

Thanks,
Alastair

Re: Patch build fails

Hi Alastair,

It seems that the patch temporary folder cannot be removed. Try deleting the "~pcw_tmp.tmp" directory from your Temp folder and rebuilding the patch.

Re: Patch build fails

Hi Cosmin,

I tried deleting this folder several times but with no improvement, exactly the same error is received.

Since 7.6.1 built the project successfully, I have emailed your support team to ask for a copy of the 7.6.1 installer.

I need to build the patch urgently and if this succeeds as a temporary workaround then I'd be relieved.

Thanks,
Alastair

Did you try rebooting the machine after deleting the folder? Perhaps a process is limiting access to that folder.

You can download older Advanced Installer versions by using your license key on our customer information page. However, this error is returned by the Microsoft tools used to create the patch. It is not related to Advanced Installer.

Re: Patch build fails

Hi Cosmin,

I have rebooted the machine but the problem persists.

One of the errors in the log - 2248 - is documented as
2248 Database: [2] GenerateTransform/Merge: Column type in base table doesn't match reference table. Table: [3] Col #: [4]

This suggests a change in the structure of one of the tables; is the msi file created differently by v7.7 ?

Thanks,
Alastair

Re: Patch build fails

Hi Cosmin,

After uninstalling v7.7 and Installing v7.6.1, I have been able to successfully build the patch after making no changes to the project. I needed to rebuld the "Upgrade To" MSI, then rebuild the patch. No errors were encountered and the patch applied successfuly while logged in as an administrator and I assume that other tests will be successful.

So it does look like v7.7 creates an MSI that cannot be used to create a patch where one of the target MSIs was created by v7.6.1.

I hope this helps you track down the problem.

Kind regards,
Alastair
