Invalid serial number using advertised link

Hi!

Some of our customers reported a strange behaviour after installing our software.

The installation procedure runs without any problems. When trying to start the software using the advertised link to the exe file in the start menu, a dialog box appears saying something like "Please wait while Windows configures [product]", then a second dialog box appears saying "Invalid serial number". Starting the program without using the advertised link works without any problems.

Has anybody experienced this before? We are not able to reproduce this on our test machines.
The problem only show up on Windows 7 so far. We are using Advanced Installer 5.1.1

Thanks in advance,
Alex

Re: Invalid serial number using advertised link

Hi Alex,

This is happening because when running the advertised shortcut, some of the components are altered on your client's machine and a repair is triggered. During the repair, your serial validation is triggered as well. The only solution in this case, since you are using version 5.1.1, would be give up the advertised shortcut.

If you were using our latest version( Enterprise edition ) you would have access to the Table Editor feature which would allow you to condition and skip the serial validation during the repair process.

Re: Invalid serial number using advertised link

Hi Mihai!

Thanks for your reply.

We certified our product for Windows Vista and one of the required tests was the auto-repair feature. This worked without any problems so I am a litte surprised that there are issues now when using Windows 7.

As there are only some of our clients experiencing this without knowingly altering the installation, I thought there may be a difference in behaviour with Windows 7. On our test machines running Windows 7, there are no issues.

Do you know a way to get a log output for the repair process when axecuting the advertised link?

Kind regards,
Alex

Hello Alex,

To find out how to create a verbose log of the repair please follow this link. After your customers have created the log, could you please send a copy to support at advancedinstaller dot com for us to investigate?
