cannot open AIP files with the new 3.5.1 version of AI

Whenever I click on an AIP file, it tries to run the Advanced Installer 3.5.1 setup program. I see in the links elsewhere that the fix is to send you all my AIP files so you can fix them and send them back.
THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

I should not be asked to send you my personal AIP files. Rather you should make a patch to fix this problem.

PLEASE RESPOND ASAP. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

PS. The workaround is to open the AI program first and then open my API file from the file menu, but this is very inconvenient and not standard program protocol.
Lucky.

Hey mjvitale,

I'm a fellow user of AI (not a developer of this product), and I feel some of your frustration. Many of us have ran into similar problems. I felt a little uneasy about sending .AIP files at first as well. However as a software engineers we all know that while it may be unnacceptable to many, it helps a lot in bug tracking and fixing.

I just wanted to encourage you that the AI staff is pretty good about helping fix problems when we help them. I've seen both temp fixes and solid fixes in a turnaround as little as 24 hours, and at a maximum a week.

It is very frustrating to have problems in what should be a solid piece of software that we pay for. But again, the staff is pretty helpful. This is why we get 6 free months of maintenance. With their turnaround, that's enough time to get anything you need fixed.

Sorry and best of Luck,

Hi mjvitale,

From what you describe, there seems to be a problem with your AI installation (the AIP file association in Windows Explorer to be exact), not with your AIP files. You should try reinstalling Advanced Installer. If the problem persists, then it might be a problem with the version of Windows Installer available on your machine. If you have version 3.0, it is recommended that you upgrade to version 3.1 as it addresses some issues discovered in version 3.0.

Windows Installer 3.1 can be downloaded from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
or
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/wininstallnt.html
I should not be asked to send you my personal AIP files. Rather you should make a patch to fix this problem.
You are right. However, as I said previously, I do not think that there is a problem with your AIP files, so you do not need to send them to us.

Please let me know if you still encounter problems.

Regards,
Denis

What version of Windows Installer do I have already?

How does one check for the version of windows installer already on my machin? I do not see an entry for it under add/remove programs and I don't know what the name of the file is.

I already had the latest version of the Windows Installer by looking at the properties for msi.dll in the windows\system32 directory, so I just tried re-installing Advanced Installer and that fixed it.

There might be a bug in the new way updates of AI are applied, where AI controls the update instead of the user just running a dowloaded AI installer program.
