The handle is in the wrong state for the requested operation

I have a machine that seems to not be able to update ANY programs created by advanced installer.

I have 2 programs and both are installed on a specific computer. Whenever I try to update that machine it gives: The handle is in the wrong state for the requested operation‏.

Other computers with the same programs have no problem.

I believe that the issue first started with a corrupted installer file that I installed on 2 computers. Both computers had the same error message. I was able to get one of them out of the bad state some how, but I have tried everything on the other computer. I even uninstalled both programs then reinstalled. Still nothing.

Thanks,
Alan

Re: The handle is in the wrong state for the requested opera

Hello Alan,

Can you please send us the .AIPs (project files) of your old version, of your new version and of your updates configuration project to support at advancedinstaller dot com so we can investigate them? Also, try to iterate a more detailed step by step test case scenario which you are using to replicate the issue.

Here is another thread, "download and install error", debating the same error which maybe is useful for you.

All the best,
Daniel

Re: The handle is in the wrong state for the requested opera

I can upload the .aip files, but I don't believe that it will be insightful. I don't have the aip file in the state that it was in when it caused the other computer to become corrupted. I cannot reproduce the issue. One computer got into a bad state 2 months ago, no other computer has gotten into the bad state since. It doesn't matter which project I use, that computer cannot update.

I want to uninstall everything and delete everything on that machine and try a clean install from a new msi file. Can you tell me where ALL artifacts are for an install? Does any info get saved into the users AppData during install? Where do the .msi and .ini files get saved during an update? are they deleted? What registry values are stored? If some or all of this information is in the setup file where can I find it?

Sorry for all the questions. I know part of the answer to a lot of these questions, I just want to make sure that I delete ALL artifacts from the install.

Thanks,
Alan

Also, I have searched high and low for a solution including the link where you sent me. I tried that and it didn't help.

Re: The handle is in the wrong state for the requested opera

Hello Allan,

The installed updater, during installation updates, copies itself temporary in "Temp" folder of the user which launched it. However, after the updates are installed the temporary Updater is deleted. Also, the downloaded INI and MSI files from your server are downloaded in the path specified in the "DownloadsFolders" key of the INI file residing alongside the installed Updater.

However, in order to make sure you are removing any remnants generated by a broken installation you should try to use the Fix it Windows tool.

Let us know if this helped.

All the best,
Daniel

Running the Fix it tool fixed the problem. Thank you, this has been an issue for months! When I got that error there was some corrupted value somewhere whether it was the registry or a file. fix it cleaned everything off and I can now update.

Thanks again,
Alan
